Since 2014 - UTZ Certification for Cocoa Plantations

The Forest Climate Protection Project “CO₂OL Tropical Mix“ in Panama not only includes the reforestation of indigenous trees, but since this year has also been replanting cocoa plantations in the Bocas del Toro province. As the first cocoa project in all of Panama, it has now been awarded the UTZ label. The UTZ Certification stands for good agricultural and management practice, safe and healthy working conditions, banning child labour, and practicing environmental protection. “CO₂OL Tropical Mix“ was one of the first five forest and land use projects worldwide to be awarded the Gold Standard. Again, “CO₂OL Tropical Mix“ has been confirmed in its pioneering role of the past years. This has found acknowledgement in the market, so that the project became part of the GOGREEN program of Deutsche Post DHL this year. If you ship carbon-neutral with the GOGREEN label, you are sure to support - along with other projects - our “CO₂OL Tropical Mix“ project in Panama.

PRINT 4 RESELLER support the “CO₂OL Tropical Mix“ reforestation project in Panama. With this climate protection project, CO2OL customers can support the reforestation of fallow land with mainly indigenous trees to create a mixed forest. Trees break up carbon as they grow, store it and bind it. Carbon emissions produced in another place, such as in business operations or production of printings, can thus be compensated. The forests created in this manner then become a natural carbon disposal site, a place to dispose of inevitable carbon emissions.

Supporting this project has manifold effects: The forest climate project “Tropical Mix“ now follows the criteria required by the WWF Green Carbon Initiative for forest and climate protection projects. Compliance with these standards in CO2OL means, first of all, that safe carbon binding, permanence and additionality of the climate protection projects is guaranteed. The standard assures that no projects which merely generate carbon certification as a by-product are implemented, but that actual and additional carbon reduction is achieved by compensating carbon emission through reforestation. On top of that, compliance with the standards assures quantifiable social and economical added values, such as inclusion of the local population and protection of biodiversity in these forest climate projects. “Tropical Mix is the first reforestation project worldwide to meet the strict requirements of three leading, international climate protection standards: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Standard for ecologically and socially sustainable forestry, the CarbonFIX Standard (CFS) for transparent and effective carbon compensation, and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard (CCBS) for positive effects on biodiversity, water and habitat protection and the local population,“ says Dirk Walterspacher, divisional head of CO2OL with ForestFinance in Bonn. “The combination of these standards proves the highest level of safety and transparence for companies who want to implement their carbon compensation through forest climate projects with us for standard prices,“ Walterspacher adds.
